We're a group of passionate sailors, which sailing area would you recommend on the Adriatic? Should we choose North or South Adriatic?

Between North and South Adriatic, I would recommend sailing in Central Adriatic :) The Central Adriatic has the largest number of islands therefor it is the most interesting area for the sailors. Also if you start your charter vacation from the Central Adriatic you can always choose to sail north or south. When sailing south you can visit Mljet and Korcula where I would suggest you to spend the night. Then you can continue sailing towards Dubrovnik where you can sail through Elaphite islands and finish your tour by exploring beautiful Dubrovnik. If you choose to sail south during the 7 day charter it would be best if you can find charter agency which provides one way charters so you can, for example, start your vacation in Split and finish it in Dubrovnik. This option will leave you enough time to enjoy in any island you wish to visit along the way.

Hi there, I’ve read your answer regarding the Central Adriatic as an ideal sailing area. Could you recommend any specific route that we can take, since we’re thinking of renting a sailing yacht from Marina Kastela next year and we would like to do some research first and check what’s worth visiting? But, we wouldn’t like to go on a one way charter…

last year I was on a sailing holiday in Croatia with my family and friends and we took the North/Central Adriatic route with a sailboat.
We sailed out of Kremik marina, near Primosten and we went to Skaradin, than to Vodice, Murter, Dugi Otok, national park Kornati, Karprije and back to Kremik Marina.
This was amazing!
We are considering chartering a sailboat in Croatia again next year, but I think we will be going a little more south. I hear Brach and Hvar are beautiful, so I look forward to that!

We chartered a sailing yacht in Croatia, this was in 2005 I think. I don't recall all the places we visited, but I remember that the skipper took us to the island of Lastovo where we tasted the best lobsters in the world and enjoyed the perfectly clear sea. It was a wonderful charter holiday and I recommend everyone to visit to Lastovo.

Sailing between houndred of small islands and bays of Lastovo Archipelago, oooh, that was great experience! Unfortunately I didn't taste the lobsters but I have no doubts they are delicius as the food everywhere in Dalmatia is excellent...

Oh my God Lastovo!
We met a local fisherman in "Skrivena luka" and he took us fishing near this cute little island "Saplun" one day. That was amazing!
He caught a couple of lobsters in the "vrsha" that he placed there the night before -I held a live lobster in my hand, wish I could post photos here :-D! Ehough we ate octopus with potatoes baked under the "peka" -what a bliss!
Lastovo is amazing, there are so many little coves where one can moor, and "Uvala Krucica" on the north side of the island is a cove with a "pirate house"; where the "pirates" will fire a cannon to "welcome" guests into their cove!
When facing Zaklopatica cove from the sea, Krucica cove is on the right hand side -make sure you visit! :-)

Nina now you have me wondering!
we were planning to go to Brac, Hvar and Kocula -but Lastovo seems so interesting that I am having second thoughts!
what I hate is that when we go sailing my friends always want to visit as many towns as possible, as they like to party and go clubbing, while I prefer to stay on the boat and just relax.
we're still looking for a way to combine that!

we've been to Lastovo, not sailing, but with the ferry and it was superb!
I am sure that sailing around the island would be even more fun: there are so many beautiful coves and bays that it's crazy!

I just left a comment on another subject and asked for advice on the charter agencies in Croatia, but would also like to have a suggestion about which islands to visit on our charter vacation?
THANKS!

Hi, Olaf! Thanks for your question. In my opinion certainly not to be missed on your Croatia sailing holidays are the islands of Brac, Korcula and Hvar. If you’re starting your charter from Marina Kastela, you can choose to spend the first night in the marina or sail to the Island of Brac, but this would depend on how late you’ll embark on the first day. One of the possible itineraries is:
1. Marina Kastela – Island of Brac
2. Island of Brac - Island of Hvar
3. Island of Hvar - Island of Korcula
4. Island of Korcula - Island of Scedro
5. Island of Scedro – Island of Vis
6. Island of Vis - Pakleni Islands
7. Pakleni Islands - Marina Kastela
I’m sure you will be able to find a lot of information on these places since they are pretty popular tourist destinations here in Croatia and if you choose to sail on this route I bet you won’t be disappointed!

here's an idea:
fly with a "low cost airline" to Rijeka Airport, on island Krk, get a transfer to Punat Marina and sail out to Rijeka -> Opatija & Lovran -> continue to Island Cres: Valun, Martinscica &/or Osor; than continue to Mali Losinj Island, than to Rab; on Island Rab, return to Stara Baska on island Krk and back to Punat Marina.
Opatija & Lovran are very charming towns to visit, and island Cres & Mali Losinj are areas of preserved nature and beautiful scenery.
after the peace and quiet, get back to reality with Rab and Stara Baska; two beautiful island towns, perfect to end your vacation before going back to civilization! ;-)
the smell of the sea and the sounds of crickets that stayed in my mind keep me from going crazy in the cold winter days!
