Split is the largest city and the economic and cultural center of Dalmatia. It is located at 43˚31 'north latitude and 16˚27 east longitude in the center of Dalmatia on the Split peninsula surrounded by mountains (Mosor, Kozjak and Perun) and islands (Ciovo, Solta and Brac). History of Split
The origin of Split is connected with the construction of the palace in 305, which was built and in which the Roman emperor Diocletian lived until his death. Although the Roman emperor built foundations of the modern city, he is more talked about in the city itself in a negative context because he is credited with the execution of the bishop of the Roman Catholic Church, Dujam. Dujam was later proclaimed a saint and protector of the city, and the most recognizable landmark of the city, the bell tower of St. Duje, was built in his honor.
